Children without any knowledge of German can attend the Integrated Secondary School (ISEK) from Grade 5 after passing an entrance test. The language of instruction is initially English, but the main focus is on learning German.
ISEK was founded in 1989 to take in non-white pupils in opposition to the apartheid policy. To this day, ISEK provides intensive financial support for children from underprivileged social classes, thanks to extensive funding from the German government.
In this sense, ISEK explicitly pursues the goal of overcoming both socio-cultural and economic barriers and promoting the comprehensive integration of all pupils at the DSJ. To this end, ISEK also runs the Saturday School, an early education programme for fourth graders from various partner schools in Soweto.
